PET CT Scan – Purpose, Procedure and Complications

Hi, today I am going to explain why and
how is a PET CT scan is done. PET CT scan is a combination of positron emission
tomography and computed tomography. The computer tomography provides detailed
pictures of the tissues and organs, while the positron emission tomography reveals
the activities of the tissues and the organs. It is an advanced nuclear imaging
technique that is used to detect and diagnose cancer. A PET CT scan can
provide detailed information about the abnormal cells and tissues in the body.
It also helps to detect various other medical conditions like brain disorders,
problems in the central nervous system and heart. Though PET CT scan is a
non-invasive procedure a patient needs to follow certain instructions before
the scan. You should avoid the consumption of food at least four to six hours before
the scan and you’re not permitted to consume caffeine at least 24 hours prior
to the scan. You will be injected with a small amount of radioactive material a few
hours before the scan. It will be absorbed by the tissues in the body and
provide a clear picture. You will be asked to lie down on a table that slides
into the PET CT machine. The machine then captures 3-dimensional images which will
be further reconstructed using a special computer. The entire procedure may take
up to three hours. The scans will isolate the cancerous cells if there is any and
helps in determining the course of the treatment. It provides details such as
size, stage and the exact location of the tumor. Though it is an advanced imaging
technique PET CT scan has its own limitations. During the scan a patient is
exposed to radiation which can be harmful. Due to this the PET CT scan is
not prescribed more often as it may cause cancer. And sometimes the
radioactive material injected may cause allergic reactions. But it is said that
the complications caused by the PET CT scan is very minimal. If you are looking
